Gerald Peters Contemporary is pleased to present Patrick Dean Hubbell: You Embrace Us. The exhibition of new works examines the commodification and cultural appropriation of Indigenous objects and design.
First developed in 2014, the series Untitled Appropriation utilizes curio blankets to bring attention to continued colonialism. Commonly found in travel souvenir shops in reservation border towns, Patrick Dean Hubbell (Diné) paints over these mass manufactured blankets to near obscurity. This intentional defacement of the blanket disrupts the image and its contexts.
Throughout the history of colonial conquest, acquiring and commodifying cultural objects for profit has persisted. The present-day shift to mass manufacturing has created a genre of poorly made synthetic imitations that undermine Indigenous People. Through re-appropriation and reclamation, my work intentionally transfigures these colonial reproductions and furthers the conversation of Indigenous inclusion.
Hubbell continues the series, incorporating reproduction baskets and dreamcatchers. Through cutting, stitching, and painting over, Hubbell dismantles these objects and their colonial underpinnings.
A member of the Diné nation, Hubbell’s work has always sought address the ongoing struggle for social visibility and recognition of Indigenous Peoples. His work has been exhibited nationwide and can be found in the collections of the Denver Art Museum and Perez Art Museum, Miami, FL. In 2017 he was awarded a prestigious Pollock-Krasner grant.
