Gerald Peters Contemporary is pleased to present Unaccompanied Voices, Monty Little’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. Little’s art practice, predicated on cultural reclamation and social empowerment, explores issues of colonialism, displacement, and the artist’s own personal history.
For the upcoming exhibition, the artist will present a series of his Survivance portraits. The title of series and its content reflect the teaching of cultural theorist Gerald Vizner who posited that, “Survivance is an active sense of presence, the continuance of native stories, not a mere reaction, or a survivable name.” Encapsulating this conceptual pursuit, Little depicts partially obscured faces charged with bold colors and graphic features. The result is a penetrating social commentary and celebration of the dynamic and enduring presence of Indigenous Peoples.
Monty Little (Diné, b. 1983) is an artist working in a range of media with a particular focus in printmaking. He holds a BFA in Studio Arts in Printmaking and Painting as well as a BFA in Creative Writing in Poetry from the Insitute of American Indian Art, Santa Fe, NM. In 2023 was awarded an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI. His works have been exhibited nationwide, most notably with the Chazen Museum of Art, Madison, WI; Oklahoma Contemporary, Oklahoma City, OK; and the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, Santa Fe, NM. He is a United States Marine Corps veteran, serving honorably from 2004-2008.
