Gerald Peters Gallery is pleased to present
Badlands, a new exhibition by Scott Kelley. Drawn
to extreme places, Kelley brings his own unique
vision of the Southwest with works that are at once
playful, imaginative, and elegantly rendered. This
will be his second solo exhibition and features his
beguiling watercolor and ink paintings of wildlife
placed in other worldly landscapes inspired by his
travels in New Mexico.
Nothing says New Mexico to me like the Badlands. It
looks like you’ve left earth and landed on some
inhospitable planet in the outer reaches of our
galaxy. There truly is no other place quite like it. To
put it kindly, the place is completely deranged, and
also precisely the kind of landscape I am drawn to.
It’s not like the traveling has changed my artistic
practice, at least from a technical point of view. I
pretty much paint and draw the same, no matter
where I am, just watercolor on paper and not much
else. But traveling changes how I see things, and
thus how I see the paintings – regardless of where
they might be of. As I get older, I have yielded to
the fact that I am, at heart, a storyteller – and the
paintings are, at their core, stories. — Scott Kelley
