The group of paintings and sculptures on view represents the varied topography and people in this country which have been subjects for artists since the 18th century.   By concentrating on works created after 1900, a clear distinction emerges between the artwork produced in or inspired by the West (and in this exhibition, primarily the Southwest) versus the more traditional paintings and sculpture created by East Coast artists.
Among the artists represented are several of the best-known painters of the Taos School – Ernest Blumenschein, E. I. Couse, Martin Hennings, Victor Higgins and Joseph Sharp.  On the Gallery’s 2nd floor (The East) works by painters Leon Kroll, Edward Potthast, Jane Peterson and Martha Walter are included amongst others.
