My work is informed by nature, a kind of mythical nature. The power of storms, the spiritual quality of the elements, the beauty, grace and ferocity of plants and animals…something greater than myself, something I can’t comprehend. Phil Garrett did his undergraduate work at the University of South Carolina, and after a tour of duty in the US Navy, the Honolulu Academy in Honolulu Hawaii , studying under renowned printmaker Gabor Peterdi. He received his BFA at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1974 after study with Kathan Brown founder of Crown Point Press. His work is in numerous public and private collections, including the SC State Museum, Greenville County Museum, Morris Museum and the State Collections of South Carolina, New Mexico and Hawaii. He has completed numerous artists’ residencies, taught painting and printmaking nationally and internationally. He joined the Golden Artist Colors Working Artist Program in 1998 and has lectured about acrylic and oil painting in numerous venues. In October 2005, 2006 and 2007 he Lectured and taught workshops on Acrylic Painting Methods in Art Schools in the cities of Osaka, Tokyo ,Nagoya , Kyoto and Fukuoka Japan sponsored by Golden Acrylic and Turner company of Osaka . He is the author of the book INSIDE ACRYLICS published by North Light in August of 2013.
