Considered to be America’s most important Beaux-Arts sculptor, Saint-Gaudens had his hand in most of the major monuments, architectural projects, and art fairs at the end of the 19th Century, both in the United States and abroad.
Amongst his most famous works are the Robert Gould Shaw Memorial (Boston Common), the standing figure of Lincoln (Lincoln Park, Chicago), Admiral Farragut (Madison Square Park, NYC), the equestrian monument of William Tecumseh Sherman (59th and Central Park, New York), The Puritan (Springfield, Massachusetts), Diana of the Tower (formerly Madison Square Garden, NY).
In addition to these public monuments, Saint-Gaudens produced important memorials (Clover Adams, Rock Creek Park, DC and Robert Louis Stevenson for St. Giles Cathedral, Edinburg), portrait reliefs of his contemporaries as well as reductions of his large-scale public sculptures. Saint- Gaudens is best known outside of the art world as the creator of the rare gold coin- the Twenty dollar double headed eagle.
