James McElhinney | American Nocturnes June 14 - July 20. 2024
The Gerald Peters Gallery, Santa Fe is pleased to present American Nocturnes, a new exhibition of watercolors, monoprints and intaglio etchings by James McElhinney.
Night scenes have fascinated American painters from Frederick Remington to Georgia O’Keeffe. While daylight vistas exercise the powers of observation, nighttime gives work to the imagination.
In these paintings and prints, McElhinney explores the more ethereal aspects of nature glimpsed only at night, creating haunting landscapes from the Hudson River Valley to the Desert Southwest. Edges dissolve and the landscape is simplified and devoid of details. Capturing the nuances of light, color and shadow, McElhinney evokes a mood as well
as a place.
McElhinney is a graduate of Yale School of Art. He is a recipient of a fellowship from the National Endowment for
The Arts and a grant from the Pollock Krasner Foundation.
His artworks are found in the collections of the Petrie Institute of Western Art and the Museum of the Southwest.
Inspired by historic expeditionary artists, McElhinney is also the author of the Sketchbook Traveler series. Each volume explores a specific region of the US and celebrates the practice of drawing, painting and writing in journals to enhance and promote mindful travel.
